Meet Alphabet, Google’s New Corporate Boss

In perhaps the biggest tech news of the week… Google announced the launch of a brand new parent holding corporation, Alphabet Inc., whose playfully innocuous name belies its impact. As current Google CEO Larry Page — who will now helm Alphabet Inc., with Google co-founder Sergey Brin serving as President — noted in his blog post:

“…the whole point is that Alphabet companies should have independence and develop their own brands.”

In other words, the failure of one product or venture won’t impact the company’s overall valuation any longer. Given the recent death of Google+, that rationale shouldn’t shock marketers… And marketers should also take note: under the new structure, search, ads, and YouTube will remain under the Google umbrella.

Twitter officially drops 140-character limit… for direct messages

Ever felt constrained by Twitter’ 140 character count? Well now the sky — or at least 10,000 characters — is the limit for direct messages on the platform. The change offers greater conversational appeal that will help the network keep up with more message-heavy social platforms, including, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
